funky shifting, advice please?

I just took my chances and bought a very clean 1989 900 Turbo despite it's weird shifting... it is extremely finicky getting into 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse. Once in gear, it doesn't pop out at all, and there's no grinding or whining. But finding the grooves for these four gears is quite difficult. Getting into 1st and 2nd requires pushing further left than normal until it kind of pops into place (once it's far enough left, it goes up and down between 1st and 2nd fine). 5th and reverse feel like they have a very narrow margin of error and are not in the normal path -- they each require patience and several tries before finding the gear.
The guy I bought it from has owned it and cared for it lovingly for over 20 years, and says his mechanic said it's normal for an old Saab. I've driven enough classic Saabs to know that this is not normal. Supposedly the linkage is fine. I've searched around on Saabnet and it seems like the linkage is the most likely solution. Any thoughts? I'm crossing my fingers that this isn't going to require a tranny rebuild -- there's nothing else wrong with the car and I got a good deal. I'm not going to be able to bring it to a mechanic for a month due to travel, so hoping for some peace of mind from Saabnet...
