Probably what has happened is that the rubber bushing in the front of the shifter assembly has deteriorated. There is a rod that goes from the shifter assembly to the transmission.
Normally, when you move the shifter from side-to-side, this rod rotates. When the bushing gets mushy from grease in the shifter assembly, the rod moves from side to side, and the shifting is vague, at best.
I did thie repair on my '89 last year.
it takes a few hour for somebody who has done it before.
If you want, I can write up the procedure.
