double checked by someone who understands how they work.
Everything can look fine until someone observes the shaft while someone goes thru all 5+1 gears.
The 20 year owner and a mechanic who says this is normal raise red flags.
You don't say how many miles, but this is abnormal for even 300K.
You can direct this check yourself anywhere the car can be on a lift.
From below -
Clean shift shaft on both sides of coupler - coupler is between firewall and trans - and put a lengthwise mark on both sides of the coupler.
I like to use a shiny silver sharpie to contrast with dark background.
Going thru all gears the two marks should not change relative to each other. Something wrong in the shifter will usually show up here with side to side movement of the shaft coming thru the firewall.
There are several different versions of the shaft coupler, all with a rubber section that can - and does - deteriorate. They can look fine unless observed in action.
3-4 is the 'center' gate of the shift pattern. 1-2 and 5-R require working against springs resisting the rotation of the shifter shaft.
If the coupler is the '+' shaped version they are notorious for looking OK and when failed can allow only 4th gear. If it is this type and failed the rubber portion of the joint is available as a Saab 9000 part.
Careful observation from above with a strong flashlight while someone works the shifter can usually show the problem.
Good luck - find a good Saab tech for maintaining your Saab.
