There are a couple of options:
- When I posed the question how to get the rubber bushing on over the big end of the shift rod, one guy mentioned that he cuts them and essentially glues onto the plastic bushing. When the plastic bottom cover is bolted back onto the shifter assembly, it is supposed to hold the rubber bushing in place.
- When I did the job, I stretched the rubber bushing over the big end of the shift rod. You wouldn't think that it's possible, but it's actually doable. It took warming the rubber bushing in a cup of water in the microwave, a lot of dish soap, and a couple of large screwdrivers to get it past the hoop. It returned to shape and was tight on the white plastic busing when it was done.
Hope this helps.
