I see I can buy an entire distributor for the 2.0T engine from RockAuto. If this problem is common it might be worthwhile to install the "new" rebuilt then replace seals in the leaking one to have a shelf spare.
I found on-line diagrams of the convertible top side rails showing the hinges. My guess on what is wrong matches your description of past repairs. Namely that the retainer on a pivot pin, be it a threaded nut or a Jesus clip, popped loose and the pin fell out or is wobbling/jamming in the hinge point.
What is your opinon of the 175K miles? My intended usage is as a summer time fun car only. Is this too close to recommended maximum mileage for dependable fun use?
It will be a 2+ hour roadtrip to see this car. Luckily my wife won't object to being a co-pilot on the drive since her mother lives only 4 or 5 miles away from the seller.
