When you restart the car (toggling the ignition off and back on), then you restore it like... like you're restoring your windows 7 to the one of the stable restore points.
I'd say that for some unknown reason your ECU went off the algorithm - either cause of the corrupted flash memory segment or the RPM signal stumbling, whatever. And then you just... hit F8 and selected 'restore from the last known good configuration' - and that very configuration happened to be really good and stable. If it happened to be located in another corrupted flash memory segment, it wouldn't start up again. Or if that naughty sensor was keeping fooling the ECU, it wouldn't start up again.
Nevertheless, if you see the shift-up light when it shouldn't come up (here you'd better refer to the owner's manual or saabnet public wisdom), then you'd better check tracing that very #686 wire all way long. If it is damaged, fix it. If it's good, try a good known ECU.
