I too have a n/a 89. I have had many intermittent no starts problems. More than all my other 900s combined. The diagnostic guide in the Bentley never positively identified a fault in all my problems. In your particular situation, you may want to try swapping the air mass meter with a known good one. If that doesn't work, here are some other items to check that are mostly specific to 88s and 89s.

A few points

. many 89s had "bad" ECUs. They usually fail with a persistent no start but not always
. 89 (and some 88) had an ignition amplifier. There was a service bulletin for fixing the ground. (See the Townsend site)
. Check the routing of the low voltage coil wires. They should not touch each other and be routed as far away from each other as possible
. Check the ground wires on the head near the AIC valve.

(Zig might think I'm the kind of guy who gets a flat tire and has to swap out three tires to find the bad one but sometimes that's the way things go with intermittent problems. :)
