Since the wiring on this car is generally stable and free from the stresses that wiggling around subject copper to, and the wiring in question isn't in areas known to get corrosion, I'd say it's not at all likely to be a bad wire.
And, changing the ECU is pretty much a snap compared to chasing down some wire, and theorizing first what wire it might be that could make the trouble being experienced.
So, if you have spare parts on hand to use for swapping, and if they're plug and play items, and if they're something known to occasionally fail, real menn are practical thinkers and go the easy route, just to see.
Gigantor, sorry, no real thoughts on your trouble except it does seem, if you smelled fuel, that some kind of spark failure is what happened, at least in your first failure to run episode.
