How does it idle when warmed up? A TPS problem is a real probability but with this symptom that should cause idling problems too. I don't think that a small vacuum leak would do this. A big one would but it would cause other symptoms too (like no start). With a small vacuum leak you'd be getting incoming air that the AMM and ECU don't know about (although the O2 sensor would eventually tell the ECU) I don't think that would skew the mixture sufficiently to kill the engine. Would most likely cause the engine to rev up as the O2 sensor tells the ECU to add gas. Just had a '93 turbo C900 in here tht idled crazy high and turned out to be a vacuum leak at the evap. canister.
