DET,
the brake fluid must be changed on a regular basis at least every two years or 60,000 km (it's a Mordor thing for your 40,000 miles). Not should to or ought to or is to, but must.

Ok, to your questions:
- I dunno, I've never ever been topless yet. But I'd expect it to be in the same location as on other body types: under the RR passenger seat. It features that very ECU-style connector like the ones on other ECUs - LH, EZK and so forth - and there's ATE ABS label on the case.

it's that aluminum thing under the black pioneer thing
- the brake fluid indicator light is driven by the pressure and fluid level sensors, the abs indicator light is driven by the ABS ECU, pls see the Bentley wiring diagram. Per your description I'd say that most probably it's the fluid level sensor (more probably: the connector) faulty - it's ok when both lights are on after the car has been sitting for a while, but if the ABS ECU doesn't turn on the pump - and assuming all the wire harness is in good condition and not damaged or corroded - then it means it doesn't sense the brake fluid in the reservoir (there's no point in switching on the pump if there's no fluid: you'll have no brake and will fry the pump).
- I'm with you on the assumption that the damaged front wheel speed sensor wire isn't the root cause for your rear axle braking issue. But the damaged cable must be repaired.

To the bottom line: I'd say that most probably the RR hydraulic line is damaged or clogged (like... with corrosion products) - the rear axle brakes so it isn't the MC or the valve faulty. But you still have to do the brake roller test (Mark above says elfs do not do the drum test) to confirm the theory and the faulty and after it's confirmed you've got to make your way from there. If you don't perform that test at MOT then you may have to search for a brake shop with that equipment thing, I wouldn't expect them to charge more than $30-50 for that.
