The way you're describing it sounds to me like a wheel bearing. The classic description is either a grumble or a buzz related to wheel speed, which changes during slight turns.
Inner drivers will make similar noises, but only under load (until they get VERY BAD). To eliminate, when it's making the noise, dip the clutch. Noise go away? Probably inner drivers. Does it get worse when going uphill under lots of load at high speed? Again, probably inner drivers.
Outer CV joints click, but usually only while turning. Generally worst at full lock. If your boot only has a small slit in it, I suggest replacing the boot. Not a big deal. EMPI axles are junk, as are most "new" ones. And no, a "new" or "rebuilt" axle will not fix a worn inner driver. The drivers are cups that sit in the transmission housing, splined into the differential. They do not come with a "new" axle like they would on a "normal" car. "New" axles will only come with the tripod bearing, which slips inside the inner driver cup.
Generally, if the problem is a wheel bearing, you will hear a grumble every rotation or two. Go around a right hand curve at speed. Sound worse? It's the left one. Go around a left hand curve at speed. Sound worse? It's the right one. This "turn-dependent" behavior is typical of wheel bearings, because a left turn will load the right bearing more, and vice versa. You may also put your foot on the fender well and actually feel it, then do the same thing in the passenger seat while someone else drives and see which side feels worse to corroborate your diagnosis of side. In my experience, rotating it by hand, with no load, will tell you nothing.
And yes, you need a press. Remove the swivel member by sliding the ball joints out of the control arms and popping the tie rod end out with a hammer or ball joint puller. Then bring it and a new bearing to your favorite indie (or even a machinist) and have him or her do the presswork.
I'm surprised nobody else offered you detailed diagnostic advice. The 900 is unique in that the driver is not insulated from much of the road and mechanical noise. Generally, problems with these cars are very easy to figure out just by *listening*.
