Some driving test observations Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Thu, 7 Nov 2013 13:30:42 In Reply to: Re: Further testing to do while driving, S Carlson, Wed, 6 Nov 2013 05:13:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did some parking lot driving and have a few observations:
1. The noise is much *reduced* under load. it is more noticeable when cruising steady or decelerating, *not* in accelerating. So, this seems likely to *not be* inner driver cups or tripod bearings? Thanks for the good explanation on both. I will check the grease on these and the manual "hand shake" when I have things apart for the wheel bearings.
2. Turning to *full lock* either direction doesn't seem to produce a "click" (I assume it is a repeated click, not just once?). So, this would seem to indicate cv joints are OK. Yes, the grease still seems fresh so hopefully I am OK here just need a new boot and repacking.
3. It was hard to tell which turn direction increased the noise. But according to the prior information, it seems likely that I need wheel bearings, and I would go for both sides regardless, so will start with this (and boot repair on the cv and grease inspection other places) and then see where I am at.
thanks again,
iveand
