I just took the carpet completely out. There is a heat blanket that supposedly protects the wiring, but you can see it was darkened by the intense heat of the cat.
Can you get another ignition switch and just "hot wire" it onto the existing leads? You would also need a gear to stick up inside the switch to turn it over. That way, you don't have to take the dang shifter console all the way out, and you can see if it fixes your issues.
I've hotwired in a switch when the key switch failed so I could move the car. It won't do any good to spray stuff down inside the keyhole as far as the electrical issues are concerned. The dust could have been created a problem inside the electrical portion of the switch however, and that can't be fixed -- you have to get another switch and good luck finding one.
