Back to your problem after we finally buried XP. Sorry about the thread getting hijacked.......
If you get the center console removed under the dash, you can get to the black heating duct --- two screws holding it on the outlet, and under each seat is is a plug in duct that you can pull backwards to release the duct. Then, it should come up and away.
I'm not sure you need to go to that extent -- why do you want to open up this area? Did the ignition key break or ?
