I've cut a notch in the bottom 3/4 of the lower console/shifter housing so that I can reach the hole where you pin the stick shift in place (using a medium sized phillips screwdriver typically)when setting up the linkage. Saves a lot of time and aggravation and is completely invisible when you put the bellows-like spacer back in between the upper and lower console pieces.
I cut a similar notch into the upper console/cubby to enable me to get a finger in there to assist in installing the convertible roof/sunroof switch in there. Make it big enough to put the whole plug through. That way you avoid getting the whole mess in there, then noticing that you forgot to feed the plug under there before tightening every thing up.
