I have been having the same problem for quire some time as well. Have a 93 900T CE (#64) with close to 191K. Replaced everything and anything that it could possibly be at fault with new factory (Bosch) items. AIC, alternator, ground and positive battery cables, Optima battery (which is great by the way and fits close to stock).
The last item that I was going to focus on were the two fan units. What was interesting though was that with the A/C on there was never an idle dip with the fans running.
I happened to be at my local former dealer getting some new items when I ran in to one of the older Master Tech's that is still working there. While he is not the most talkative person his knowledge of 900 and 9000's is beyond compare.
Told him my issue and he gave me the one explanation that seemed to finally make sense.
It seems that in the early 90's, a number of customers started complaining about the temperature gauge climbing close to the red before the cooling fan would kick on, primarily on the 2.1 engines. Saab corporate ended up sending out a TSB to the delears that if anyone complained (either with a 2.1 naturally aspirated OR a 2.0 turbo), the dealer should rewire the fan circuitry, adding a different Cartier relay. By doing this, BOTH fans would turn on earlier and at THE SAME TIME to cool the engine quicker.
Problem was, it ends up putting such an enourmous load for that quick second on the charging system that you develop the idle dip. While it rebounds quickly, it is disconcerting. The car was not originally made to handle that load without the A/C on telling the AIC and everything else to keep the idlle steady.
From what I gather, it was done to just about every damn 900 that came through the shop under warranty South of Alaska. Was a great way to add an hour plus of labor on the bill to Saab.
Unfortunately, it is a pain to try to rewire the circuit back to its original state for the one fan only to work as you need to find the correct working relay.
Good luck!
