A friend of mine watched Mile High Body mechanics in Denver lift out the entire engine assembly, set it on the bench, and do the same thing, then lower it back in the car.
I guess the point was to see if the pinion bearings were really shot, and if so, then further dismantle.
Personally, I would have to "open the present" and go inside to do other things. Perhaps Mile High has already been inside that one, and they were going back to do something else, don't know.
Keeping the shims on the correct side is very important. Measure the stack thickness and record it on each side and tag it to the box in the appropriate place if you are going to walk away from it for awhile. Getting them mixed up can lead to a really really bad day.
