So, what I would do is take off the rear cover, and both side covers and look into the box and see what the condition of the ring/pinion, and how many chunks are out of the reverse slider and mating reverse gear.
Look for debris, inside the case, and save it. Lay it out on a contrasting piece of paper, and take a photo so Cmyles can see what you have lurking inside.
With 120K, you might be ready for pinion bearings, a big job, but it is out of the car, so that is a bonus. I have a 129K box in the car that is just beginning to sound like it's going to have to come out. So, I'm now pushing up the replacement of the box I have waiting for that event......the 'ol winter beater is running like a champ doing a great job over the weekend running at turnpike speeds...but, I know that the box is developing problems, and so rather than destroy it, I guess it will have to install the replacement.
The point I'm trying to make here is not to put a box in a car that isn't freshened up a bit.....
