I would say you might be going backwards somewhat....unless the steel one has a magnet / filter screen like your 1991. But, if you plan to continue to service the gearbox regularly, then it may not make a difference. You see, there is a magnet in the rear diff cover of the 1991, and the earlier models with the drain plug had a magnetic plug to pull the ferrous out of the soup, but nothing in the rear diff cover.
If you plan to put in a pump system for cooling the fluid, then it would be a good idea, and you might be able to get a magnetic filter ahead of the pump to keep out the swarf. I've never seen one, so I'd actually be interested myself in a filter that could be dismantled and cleaned like we have on the water/meth injection system.
