Here is a simple statement of fact: The vast overwhelming majority of catastrophic failures of C900 five speed transmissions are the result of high mileage and/or poor maintenance.
They require a minimum amount of a particular sort of lubricant for cooling and lubrication and the bearings will wear out and eventually allow the gears to mesh improperly causing breakage. Fixing leaking seals and gaskets promptly and maintaining lubricant level and replacing worn bearings before they begin to run off center (i.e. rebuilding the unit) is the way to make one last as long as the rest of the car.
New gears and shafts are very rare and expensive and the pool of good used parts is shrinking daily with some now being virtually unobtainable. If you like your C900 and intend to drive it for a long time please take care of it's five speed transmission. Shift into reverse carefully, don't let it get low on oil and if it has bearings making noise get it rebuilt ASAP. Every time one blows up an angel loses his dick. (That's from a movie I think?)
