I'm not going to argue that logic either. You can see the ass end of the rear pinion to see if the rollers are there or not. I've seen them sideways......IE, they were toast.
Removing the pumpkin could allow you to look in and really examine the pinion gear, and with the ring out, it would be easier to review, but how on earth you could really determine true axial or radial motion of the pinion shaft like you say Cmyles would be a tough proposition. If it was loose enough to move, the ring and pinion gears would more than likely show extraordinary wear.
Like I said, I'm always wanting to "open the present" and usually what you find inside isn't something you want for Christmas.......
