OK. Hypothetical/theoretical question here.

And mainly asking to see if anyone knows from experience.

Supposing one were going to take an C900 hatchback on a bit of an extended "off road" excursion.

And I'm not talking rock-crawling, "mudding", or any sort of extreme sort of situation off-roading.
Just rough-road, "unimproved road", forest-service road, where ground-clearance /ride-height might be an minor issue type of driving.

Q:
What is the biggest size of on/off-road type tire that could be fitted to the stock 15" wheel without running into too much wheel-well rubbing or other such driveability issues?

Because:
I'm thinking of taking the '85 turbo up some mountain roads this summer.
Wondering if an investment in some beefier tires would help make a difference while exploring around the backcountry.

Any other suggestions for improving vehicle ground clearance (without sacrificing too much comfort or driveability) would be appreciated too.
