Out with the Bosch, in with the WALBRO on my 91 Turbo Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Mon, 14 Mar 2016 19:06:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I decided to replace my 138K mile original fuel pump before she fails on me miles from home. I bought the eEuro WALBRO kit 5CA3360-1 which claims to be a "drop in" for the 90-93 cars....
WELL, not quite a drop in. While the top mount fits the lid of the factory tank, the filter basket is much larger than the smaller WALBRO pump body.... rendering it useless as a filter. Also, the OAL of the new pump won't allow it to sit on the bottom of the basket, which let's it fall down and which would eventually disconnect it from the lid circular interface.
What I've decided to do is top mount the pump to the tank lid. This kit supplies a nice single piece rubber mount that slides over the circular stub on the underside of the lid. I found a nice ABA clamp that was the right diameter, and I've clamped the pump mount to the lid. This will cantilever the pump, which I think will be fine as the mount will resist the torque reaction.
The last piece of this retrofit will be a proper filter..... I'm looking up part #s right now, to find one that will nest down inside the OE tank. Will post some pics once the assembly is together.
