So... I cleaned up the main ground point (on the crossbeam behind the radiator, and rewired some of it, using some gold-plated ring terminals and 10 ga. stranded wire, and wire nuts. A few of the wires had previously rotted/broken off their terminal and I had twisted, soldered and spliced them to a salvaged ring terminal and lead. So, I redid those, restripping them carefully so as not to shorten them too much, but just to put them into a wire nut with the 10ga stranded. I found another broken wire and put that and a couple others into another wire nut/lead wire/ring terminal assembly.
Since then, not a glitch. Engine starts and runs convincingly, and keeps running. Haven't taken an extended ride on it yet, and unfortunately may never get the chance. Will post about my new problem separately.
