That's an unusually clean 1988. Previous owner(s) paid attention cleaning the engine bay. Oregon seems a good source for used cars.
I'd source a replacement front bumper. You'll at least need to replace the bumper cover, but would have to dissemble to check the integrity of the interior bumper frame. Unbolt the under-bumper valence from the body, and two 6mm allen bolts on either side of the bumper, looking up, mounts the bumper to the frame.
Since the car isn't going anywhere, and before considering lifting out the engine for the transmission, I'd disassemble the clutch to check the pressure plate/clutch assembly for a possible cause of the trouble.
