It does sound bad. I think from the previous thread he's in Oregon? If he was close by I'd probably offer my very rusty '86 as a parts car. The transmission (a rebuilt 1989 unit installed in 2004 and babied since then) is the best part of it. But the point about the chain drive is definitely a good one, he should check that out before going through all the work of pulling the transmission.
