The first step most service shops employ would be to pull the magnetic transmission fluid drain plug. This filler plug will typically retain many steel substrates and could be an indication of transmission problems if there are large metallic substrates on the end of the oil plug, but would also provide an opportunity to check the oil for similar substrates. While this is not an acid test of the transmission internal condition, finding misc. substrates within the oil sump would be a bad indicator.

Any 900 Turbo 5 speed transmission should be retrofit from 1988 to 1993(+ 1994 Convert. Turbo).
