What's with the 2.8 vs 3.0 FPRs?

I've found that 2.8s are far more rare than 3.0s, at least in junkyards. If 2.8 is good isn't 3.0 better? It's still limited by your injectors but makes more fuel available.

Additionally, I put a 2.8 in my '85 SPG and it ran like crap. I was told that 2.8 for that year was not a good match but it took the 3.0.
