I may consider switching then...! I don't have much to add other than driving to the supermarket now got me paranoid about my transmission and now I am suddenly feeling like I have a more expensive taste in oil.

Read on if a 96 transmission may be interesting.

Years ago, Ko managed to locate a transmission for a 96 up in NH, and we used Saab-Mail to pass the cash up and the transmission down to PA through a series of handoffs between likely travelers. Along with my current 96 transmission, both were in poor shape. Though, the differences between them were interesting. The one I purchased was both newer, and stronger, with fewer needle bearings, and a case that was beefed up with additional cros. unfortunately it was in poor condition, though I did manage to reuse it. The set of shims I stole and extra spacers and lock washers was worth it, and I have the rest sitting in a box for later use.

So here I am, end of 2022 - am just wrapping up a transmission build on my V4 96. I really should put together a write up. Unfortunately almost everyone who has write ups also has the special 96 Transmission Jig. For what it's worth, I didn't find it absolutely necessary, but it would certainly made some of the parts less of a pain in the rump. I spent a lot of a time fiddling on the bench press - and destroyed a bearing by mistake doing so. Especially in regards to setting the pinion which took me several tries to get right, I think that having the jig would have been helpful - because it's a lot of back and forth adding shims until the measurements are in spec.

I should have taken more notes, and written it up, but for the 96 the name of the game seems to be, measure measure measure, and work with what you have. Many of the important bearing designations have changes so you need to guess by size, and some like the pinion shaft - the rear is a double row split bearing were available but expensive, where I opted for one without a double row.

For Gaskets, I made my own with some Fel-Pro, and used anaerobic sealer around the bellhousing (fingers crossed). For seals - I found some that fit. Luckily it's all pretty off the shelf. I ordered some snowmobile seals that worked perfectly and looked to be a similar manufacturer (WINDEROSA 25x48x8)

My clutch throw out bearing - I sourced one for a Porsche. Porsche 356A.

Another note on that, the gears ride on needles up to a certain year, after which they were replaced with a integrated plain bearing (the shaft has grooves the gear rides on). For those, there were certain bearings I could not source - the K25x29x28 needle bearing. I followed tommi's saab site and had a local machinist (same one who did my alternator bushings!) cut me a small 2mm spacer, and ordered two 25x29x13 bearings. That seemed to seat the bearings appropriately.

Overall I am happy with the rebuild - but we'll find out early next week if the transmission is ready to take the whopping 50hp the engine has next week when I finish installation.

As usual, I really need a lathe.
