> Back to the oil thing for a minute couldn't we just add that zinc product to the motor oil in the transmissions and it work just as good?

Well I think that's mostly for engines with softer valves for leaded engines. I use it on my 96. I am not sure but it may not be appropriate compared to a normal EP oil.

> Speaking of old 96 saabs, A friend of mine was at the house tonight and we were talking about his 3 stroke Bull nose. What kind of information can you tell me on putting one of those back together. Apparently he has a couple of different motors and a couple of different transmissions. I'm good with the 900s and the 9000s I don't know anything about the old stuff.

I assume you mean two stroke? I am less familiar than with the V4. The V4 is a great engine. They are dead simple. There's not much to get wrong, though maybe like me you are not a carburetor expert. I certainly am not. 2 strokes, my experience is mostly with old Tomos mopeds, and I can tell you they're very finicky. Regular rebuilds were the only thing that kept those mopeds going.

Ignition is just wires and points, dead simple. NGK BCP6ES (can use the R if you like). Wires, also NGK makes them but they're getting harder to find, you'd be faster by just cutting your own 7mm wires.

Fuel is a mechanical pump. You can source filters and new lines pretty much anywhere.

> He really wants to get them up and running. I just don't know that I want to tackle something like that. He's trying to tell me there's only a handful of moving parts on one of those motors.

> Are parts easy to locate or source for that age of a car. From my experience I would not think so.

My experience is that Steve @ Malbrad in the UK is a good source. Skandix also has some stuff like NEW clutches for the 96 with modern pressure plates. Body repair parts are available. A lot of things like wheel bearings, bearing cylinders (for the brake drums) are generic and ones that aren't you just need to use your brain on. New suspension parts are available but growing less common, though lesjofors does have springs available.

Original tire sizes are not really available, Michael S. recommended 175/65 15's which I am running a set of yokohama's with good results.

> Anything else that you could add would be great. I would really love to get a 3 stroke going. I just think that is probably not in the cards with things being the way they are as far as the age and parts being available.

Again - I havent worked on a two stroke, but the Ford V4 Engine parts are readily available from fordv4parts.myshopify.com. Being the engine was used on skidsteers and other industrial units, the parts are available.

The transmission I already gave you my write up on. but not too complex

The body work is trivial, fenders take 6 screws to remove. The headlamp assembly and front - just a few screws.

Gaskets... make your own. I'm making up some exhaust ones right now for the manifold to exhaust pipe pieces.

So - they're old and simple, truly. I have had to "make" a lot of stuff. You know, battery cables, replacement wiring, gaskets, etc but for the most part, it's all simple enough it doesn't matter. I rebuilt my slave cylinder as well, and that was with a rebuild from malbrad - but I probably could have used some random orings I had around the shop.

The biggest investment in this vehicle has been a new windshield for me, Several years ago one of my garages had a roof collapse - proof to saabs strength, the central garage beam landed on the 96 and it took the weight without major deformations to the vehicle, unfortunately the windshield was cracked. I sourced a new windshield from Tom Donnely, it was expensive and expensive to ship.

I'd recommend getting a copy of the workshop manual. These cars being simpler and with less parts availability back in the 60's, there full run downs on almost everything. Instructions on how to rebuild the alternator rather than to just replace it, and so forth. I have some in a folder here:
