Calvin, That's not a description of a TYPICAL internal issue on a 1988 five speed, seems more likely to be an external issue. If your 1988 900 has been retrofitted with a GM45714 or GM55706 (those are the 1991> variants) then there is more of a chance of this being an internal defect.
Any history on the car/transmission? How many miles? Was it recently working fine and suddenly broke or did this issue develop over time?
If it's not one of those 1991> variants my prime suspect would be the bushing in the front of the shift control housing in the passenger compartment. You'll need to remove some interior stuff to get a good look at that. If that bushing is badly shot it may be allowing the shift control shaft to swing out of line and bind up.
