Calvin, It's not unreasonable to suspect that correcting the clutch hydraulics might solve the problem and it's worth doing regardless. This does have the ring of being caused by the mentioned design flaw in the 1991> C900 five speed. Once the clip fails the shaft will tend to escape from the rear bulkhead causing the 1-2 shift fork to misbehave in a variety of ways. There are other possible causes including a breakdown of the second gear synchromesh components but that 1-2 fork clip is the weakest link in the whole unit.
