Yes, they drop right in. N.B. I am using the pre facelift E-codes. Can't speak to the later ones.

I do run them with the covers on. It hasn't been any problem. The amount of heat they generate is way lower than a halogen. I have investigated the housings after running a while and they are not even warm, nor is the air inside. The rad and turbo probably contribute more heat to the headlights than these bulbs inside.

Longer term, I used some Auxito lamps (different format, not H4 but same general idea except the fan is farther away from the board, not right in the middle so maybe they are worse at cooling) in my wife's Volvo in closed housings since 2020. The Volvo has DRLs so they are running all the time, even in high summer in the daytime when heat might be a bigger problem. I got about 4 years out of them before they cooked the thermal paste and started desoldering themselves pretty regularly. I tried to resolder and re-paste but something was flaky and they never worked for long after that. Still, 4 years is ok by me for the price.
