I must admit up front here that I am a conservative in my views on most things, especially political issues. That said I have to strongly disagree with most of what has been said on this post to this point. SUV's are not the reason we have such a high reliance on OPEC oil. The reason is our democratic, & some republican, politicians being run scared by the extreme environmentalists out there. Look at the ANWR debacle that recently occured. My understanding is the area that was going to be opened for drilling is about the same relation as a dime to an average dining room table of 4' x 6' and yet would have yielded an output of the amount we import from Saudi Arabia for the next 25 years. That alone would cut our importing of oil by about 50% wouldn't you agree?
That SUV's are big and use more gas than our Saabs goes without saying. They are however convenient when it comes to hauling lots of kids, or adults, and carrying loads. I love my 9000 Turbo and of course an SUV is never going to be as much fun. However, they are built for very different purposes.
As an aside, which may get me the wrath of the board here, I generally find that those who complain about things like SUV's also complain about people who live in large houses (5000 sq. ft. or larger) and generally cannot afford either one. While we have the right to say what we want I think there is a certain responsibility that goes with that right and that is to have good facts to support your opinion.
There, I've added my 2 cents and I hope I can still be a part of this board as I've gotten some invaluable help from it, both directly & indirectly.
By the way, how many of you would own a Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, or even a Mercedes if you had the money to pay cash and afford to drive it?
Tom R.
P.S. (now that some of us have vented a bit let's hope we can put our differences aside when it comes to the purpose of this board, helping and supporting each other with our vehicles.)
