Let me start by saying that I do not in any way consider myself an "environmentalist", but rather an economist (in training).
ANWR more than anything was a political move, trumped out by the current administration under the broad rallying cry of "reduce our dependance on foreign oil". The reason that it was able to be defeated by "environmental" concerns relatively easily was because it was so *economically* sketchy that the oil industry really didn't care if it lived or died. Multiple scientific studies of the region resulted in wildly differing estimates of the amount of oil available. To get the oil would have required TEN years of capital investment on the part of the oil companies, in the billions and billions of dollars range, which by common estimates would have resulted in the cost of ANWR oil starting at $20/bbl just to recoup the initial investment, which does not include any profit for the companies or operating costs. Basically, even if they got it out, they would have lost money, to say nothing of the damage to their images (and that is a very real $$$ concern) from the "environmental" issues. And that's assuming they could even sell it. Call it "patriot gas", price it twice as expensive as middle-eastern derived gas (you might have to to make a profit), and then see if the "reduce-our-dependance-on-forign-oil-by-increasing-US-production" whiners put their money where their mouths are and buy it.
Treating our oil needs as a supply-side problem, as the current administration does, will only lead us to increasing needs and increasing difficulty in supplying them. The long-term solution is to attack the demmand-side, and that plays *directly* into big SUVs. Make them adhere to the exact same fuel efficency standards as cars and I hounestly wouldn't have as much a problem with them - they would nessicarily shrink and be made of lighter parts, which would reduce the chances of them killing me. That's rant #2, signing out.
