Everyone, this is, as expected a controversial subject. I also appreciated Robert's and Joe's comments. I would also only buy an SUV for the reasons they themselves stated, not for a fun car to drive.
As for the thoughts of some that more fuel efficiency overall gets us I had the following thought while I was going about business today. If our overall fuel efficiency increases then prices will probably decrease, for a short time. When the demand for an item drops companies typically do a couple of things; 1)lower the price to get you to buy more, 2) decrease the supply thereby driving the price back up. In the case of oil companies and OPEC past history will tell you this is always what they do. Plus, people will drive less when prices are higher and will drive more when they are low.
To make SUV's the only scapegoat in all of this is unfair and unreasonable. I also own a, gasp, minivan. I also do like driving it to a degree as it does drive pretty well (it's a Nissan Quest). The only thing I would want to change is putting a more powerful engine in it. But then it would use more fuel I guess. It would be a lot more fun though. Please pardon the sarcasm.
I do wonder one thing as I write this. I see a lot of posts on here about increasing the power and performance of our Saabs (thereby decreasing our fuel economy) which leaves me asking aren't we kinda like the pot calling the kettle black? Our cars may not be as big as an SUV, but some of them don't do that much better. As for those who buy SUV's for status, well they do need to learn some lessons in regard to what status really is.
Tom R.
P.S. (are there really that many SUV's on the road that they alone drive down the nations fuel economy?)
