my first car was a 1936 Austin 7 Ruby and we fitted a temperature gauge by hacking a hole in the header tank and sticking the sensor bulb in with Araldite. Worked for about four years, until the rear quarter-eliptics nearly fell off due to rust. But I suppose the system wasn't pressurised like modern-day ones and, as you say, no OIL!
