Julia,
Our family has both 9000s (94 non-turbo CSE, 97 turbo CSE and a 94 Aero) and 9-5s (a 2000 and a 2004 Aero). We have found the 9-5s to be far more troublefree than the 9000s, and if you look at the Frequency of Repair data published by Consumer Reports magazine, you would see that the 9-5 appears to be the most trouble free European import in this country.
Saab made some major changes to the suspension of the 9-5 in year 2002, so if you have a choice of model years, I would probably lean towards a 2002 or later 9-5. Also at some point (2002 or 2003?) Saab went from a 4 speed automatic to a 5 speed automatic transmission, and the 5 speed is somewhat quicker in my opinion. Our 2000 9-5 (which now has 76,000 miles on it)has had very few problems, with the most significant one being that the turbocharger required replacing at 30,000 miles (under warranty). Other than that, the car has required only normal maintenance items (tires, brakes, battery, etc.).
The 9-5's body is significantly stiffer than that of the 9000, and this makes quite a difference in the feel of the car. While we very much like our 9000s (re the hatch and such), given the choice I would take a 9-5 over a 9000, (due to better ride, overall performance and much lower incidence of repairs)in a heartbeat if I could only have one car.
I hope that the above information is of assistance to you.
