The proper hose to use is called "ECO" hose, at least at Saab dealerships, and is sold by the foot. This is different from garden variety vacuum hose in that it resists breaking down from oil vapors as ordinary hose will do. If you use ordinary hose, it may become slimy and slip off the nipple again. ECO hose is not very costly -- buy yourself 6 to 10 feet of it, and cut it to the desired lengths using a razor blade. Still probably a little cheaper than silicone, and it's the factory stuff.

If you have a turbo, then Bill Davies' message is describing a check valve that is installed in the small diameter hose between the PCV valve and the intake manifold. Its purpose is to prevent the crankcase becoming pressurized when the turbocharger is on the boil. Might be worth replacing this as a matter of course while you're at it.

So here's your shopping list:

* ECO hose
* PCV valve and grommet (since one of the nipples is broken, you should replace the whole PCV valve)
* PCV check valve if you have a turbo

This whole list might run you about $50 or so, I would think.

Don't be surprised if the exhausty smell persists after this operation, although greatly mitigated. If it does, you might want to replace the ventilation air filter which may have become permeated with fumey air and thus still stinks of it. That's another $30 or so, but give it some time to see how it goes.
