This is just my opinion, but here goes.
OK you do don't get the bigger turbo and the seats, but the rest is just fine. You can put a new Aero suspension on it for $600 from Genuine Saab, with the Sachs Sport Chassis kit. (Mine is due to arrive any day now.)
You can do a Stage 1 or 2 remap of the ECU and get the same or more HP and torque as an Aero. Seats can be found in the used market. Do all that and assuming you got a nice clean CSE to start with, you probably spend about the same. Plus your suspension would be new, not XXX,000 miles old.
Plus a CSE is more likely to have been used more gently than an Aero. This is definitely important if you're thinking it's a car you'd like to get you through college. And you can budget all these upgrades.
When I got my '96 CSE 4 years ago the only Aero I could find in decent shape STILL needed about $2-3K in work and it was priced at top dollar. Most people who have Aeros know what they have and will expect to get it.
You can even get to an Aero equivalent starting with a CS model, you just have to do a couple more upgrades (different ECU and adding the BPC valve). And you can buy a decent '96 CS for a couple grand.
Good luck and have fun.
