Greetings Chuck and All who've posted.
Just as a point of perspective - I am currently driving my 3rd Aero
which is also about my 6th 9KT.
My experiences and observation have confirmed that up until recently
most people have viewed the entire 9K series as a 'grandpa car', turbo
or not.
Only in recent years around here has it been that anyone under 30 is
ever seen driving one as their own car at all.
As for the abuse angle:
Interestingly to me - the only abuse I've ever witnessed to one was
while I was passenger in my own Aero which was being driven by a Saab
dealer who was purportedly also a close friend of mine - and he had
an evil grin as he explained how much he enjoyed flogging 'these cars'.
(That happened ONCE, and it was an open exposure of his true nature.)
That car was a '93, and it was electronics that sent it away, not the
tranny (which I'd already had replaced...).
As others have said, my 2nd Aero was clearly and absolutely adored by
it's 1st owner and was pristine, unbeaten, and a pure joy - I'd have
it today were it not for 2 moose on a highway on a wet night....
My 3rd Aero came from afar, from a great guy through TSN, and is not
as pristine as the 2nd one, but was clearly well cared for - so I'd
say anything is possible and generalizations are, well - too general !
Where Yaofeng finds 'rust free' 9Ks for a 'dime a dozen' is something
I'd like to know because here in Vermont that is SOOO not the case !!!
(My nearly rust free Aero came from 1000 miles away...)
Personally, IF space and money were not an issue for me, I'd have a
few of these cars - a daily driver, a backup, and as many in whatever
condition as I could get and keep around for a while (possibly stored
in a nice one of those portable garage things out of the weather).
My question with the 9K family is NOT whether or which to ever buy ->
but it IS just how to stay in one now that their numbers are dwindling
and I have found they are ->*just right*<- as a car for me.
1998 is now over a decade gone and I'd like to stay in a 9KT for as
long as it is possible to do so.
I have neither found nor heard of any other car which is as much of
a 'driver's car' as these, and they are really what a Swedish car is
all about (as opposed to the short-lived GM versions, tired at 80k...
according to my mechanic who sees many more than I ever will.)
You may find you feel this way too after having one as a daily driver.
Best Wishes !
