I’m helping a neighbour with his 92 9000t 2.3l manual. This car has been garaged for the last three years. According to my friend, at storage time, the car drove normally. He preferred driving his Porsche, so took the insurance off the 9000. He states that shortly before storage, the clutch, slave and fuel pump had been replaced.
Here’s three years later. Fuel pump was seized. We replaced it. However, engine would not fire. I removed injectors, and vacuumed carb cleaner through them while pulsing them. Engine now runs well. However, clutch pedal went to the floor, and stayed there. I attempted a pressure bleed. Brake fluid ran out at the bottom of the bell housing. So, the almost new slave will have to be replaced.
I guess the lesson here is that if a car is to be stored, it pays to start it every once in a while, and run it until temps are up. Also, to shift and move the car back and forth a bit. This would presumably have prevented the pump and slave failures.
However, something else also happened, and it has me stumped. I attempted to move the car to elsewhere on the property. Put in first, start engine, drive car, neutral or switch off when appropriate. So, what happens? Nothing. Engine is running, car doesn’t move. I switch off, then try the same procedure on all other gears. Same result. In fact, with the engine running, gear lever can be moved to all positions – and gear lever feels normal.
Since tranny has to come out anyway, I remove battery and tray, and have a good view of the linkage. Linkage looks fine. My neighbour goes through the gears, everything looks fine. I grab the linkage, pull back the transmission end boot, everything looks and feels fine as my friend shifts. The linkage is not the problem.
The problem is inside. Has the clutch developed 100% slip while in storage/? Not bloody likely. Has the slave somehow overextended itself, and jammed in that position, thereby decoupling engine and transmission permanently? Can’t see that happening, either. Has input shaft suddenly sheared? Don’t think so.
So, what gives? We’ll find out when tranny comes out, I suppose, but I can’t wait. Any opinions?
