If the clutch line were failing and expanding as you depressed the clutch, this would in no way force more fluid into the slave cylinder. If anything, it would force less fluid, as the volume displaced from the clutch master would be partially used to expand the hose. Nothing wrong with replacing the clutch line, but it's a slight pain to do and may not be necessary. Mine developed a pin hole when the car was 20 yrs old.
I think your diagnosis was correct, that the slave is shot. The brake fluid leaking out of the transmission bell housing, with the clutch sticking either on the floor or all the way up, is exactly how it behaves in that situation. Sounds like a real project.
