A very good question.
He had two Saabs (of three)to get rid of as part of his downsizing. They were not running. The 9000 in question, and a gorgeous 92 900S convertible with a warped head, mixing oil and coolant, and leaking at the gasket on the intake side. He would give it to me, if I would help him with the 9000, which he would then sell, maybe to me. So, by agreement, first I did the 900. I milled the head, and replaced the head gasket. Found that a few mm are left on the official 11mm timing chain tensioner limit, which is good.
Found a big puzzle - flexplate was 180 degrees out of phase. Engine would interfere if I tried to right this. My guess, engine had been out - probably for tranny work, and someone jerry rigged something. So, the flexplate is back as I found it.
Everything has now been together for two months and the 900 runs great. I put the top down to drive home after work on beautiful days.
In comparison to a 9000, doors close very loudly. The three speed auto Borg Warner is not as efficient as my wife's ZF on her 9000. There's a problem with system voltage - only about 12.5V (with DMM on the dash). This, even with a new regulator. That issue can wait. I have some 900 alternators in my collection. So, I have car choices, and I'm having fun. Glad you asked!
