I think you got it backwards. If your starter is drawing 270 amps then there's too much resistance somewhere in the circuit. It should be drawing somewhere around 500-650 amps. Remember, it doesn't take more than a few hundreths of an ohm to seriously reduce the amount of available starting voltage. This is why stuff like battery post should be kept clean. This also goes for the starter terminal like in your case. This could also explain your problem with the car dying after a period of time. It doesn't take much resistance to reduce the alternator's output current, especially when you put higher demands on it like driving etc. What I'm trying to say is for you to check the connections/terminals in these circuits for things like tightness, corrosion, etc... Also, check the starter for looseness while you're down there. That may be the source of your "grinding noise". HTH
