Seriously, I just look the turbo off my '93 9k Aero to drill out a broken exhaust stud. Turbo was out and on the bench in less than one hour (closer to 30 min). If you leave the oil feed line incar its really easy. Reminds me why I love 9k over some of the other Saab models. So much room to work, I love it.
Dana's procedure looks thorough but I'm too lazy to read all that. Heres my procedure (applies to td04/ t25 should be similar):
find replacement turbo on car-part.com and have shipped(should be less than 200)
located all copper sealing washers/turbo exhaust and oil gaskets to save hassle of sourcing later.
drain coolant
remove three bolts connecting downpipe.
remove intake piping and charge piping.
move downpipe to gain easy access to water pump banjo fitting. remove banjos (others at turbo) and remove hard line.
removed banjos for coolant tube at tstat housing. move line out of way.
remove the ferrule fitting for oil delivery tube. This line connects into the back of the block on older models. Kind of a pain to get to banjo on back of block but doable. Leave it incar (banjo at block still attached) unless you want to clean/replace it.
remove two bolts holding out oil return tube and undo clamps holding on the rubber connector. remove tube.
undo 4 bolts holding turbo to manifold and move turbo towards driver side and drop through the bottom of the car.
