when a mechanic tells me I need something expensive right after I spend big bucks on a job and the car isn't running right I immediately go into "question everything" mode. There's no reason your turbo should suddenly be blowing oil unless it was damaged when it was removed during the recent surgery.

A good tech would a) know how to diagnose your issues properly, b) understand the overboost issue, c) not tell you a new turbo is the only solution (it's not), etc. Etc.

I suspect the tech made a mistake, knows it, and is covering his backside. And is hoping to hose you to pay to correct his error. If the timing is off by a tooth he will need to fix it. You'll have to proceed with some care with the guy, though, and don't buy everything he's selling. Is there someone else who can check the car over?
