Who has dropped the oil pan with the engine in the car?

Because I had the engine half apart already (I am doing a head gasket and timing chains), I thought I'd try pulling the sump (oil pan) and inspecting it for nasty, gritty things. I read up on others who had pulled the sump in situ, and figured it might be a bit of a pain, but not impossible.

However, on my car, a '94, the oil pan is held on entirely by T-40 torx bolts. The real trouble with them is you have to have a pretty much straight on perpendicular shot at them, or you'll strip the head when trying to break them loose.

When I got under the car, I found that there just wasn't any reasonable way to get a torx bit on the back screws - at least not without removing the intermediate drive shaft completely. I also discovered that I couldn't remove the flywheel cover (though I got both the big and tiny bolts out).

What have been your experiences? I'd read in the write-ups that you could lift the engine using a jack on the transmission bellhousing, and this would get you enough clearance to get the job done. I jacked it this way and that, and undid the rear bracket, but couldn't get a good line on the back row of bolts.

Those of you that have done it - how?
