Though it may be somehow possible to remove the oil pan with the engine in place, by the time you've removed everything you need to in order to get it off, you'd be better served by pulling the whole engine and transmission.
Pull the powertrain, and it's less work over all, less time on your back under the car, and you won't strip the torx bolts.
As for me, pulling the motor isn't an option for right now. I have an endoscope on order, which should arrive this week. I'll use it to take a peek down in the guts of the oil pan to satisfy my curiosity. If nothing looks too untoward, I'll proceed with the re-assembly of the timing end of the engine, and putting the head back on.
