I did it on an older 9000 that had hex bolts holding on the pan. I removed the bolts near the intermediate shaft from the side with a box-end wrench if I remember correctly. It was a miserable job, and as mentioned elsewhere, the engine still has to be lifted to clear the subframe.
I agree it would be nearly impossible to do it if the pan was held on with Torx bolts. On the other hand, pulling the engine/transmission is supposed to be relatively straight forward, unlike the 9-5's. I would probably go that route if I had to do it again.
